Local AI on iPhone and iPad

Choose between on-device AI and a self-hosted server for your iPhone or iPad. Understand offline use, memory, PDFs, images, tools and privacy.

Can I use local AI on my iPhone? Yes. You can run a supported model directly on your iPhone or iPad, or use your phone to chat with a model running on your own computer. Vanta is an AI chat client by Ezel Bayraktar that supports both approaches, alongside cloud APIs.

The useful question is where you want the model to run. “Local” can mean your phone, your desktop or a server you control. Those setups have different memory requirements, network needs and data flows.

Choose where the model runs

Setup Where inference happens Works offline? Separate server needed? Main constraint
Downloaded GGUF or MLX Your iPhone or iPad After downloading, for local chat No Supported architecture and available device memory
Apple Intelligence Apple’s on-device system runtime When the system model is available No Eligible device, OS, language and system readiness
LM Studio, Ollama or vLLM Your computer or self-hosted server Requires a connection to that server; a LAN can work without internet Yes Server resources, reachable API and model support
Cloud API Your chosen provider No The provider hosts it Internet access, API access and provider billing

Offline chat does not include online tools, remote embeddings or cloud speech. Those services have their own connection requirements.

If you want chat without a connection

Choose a supported downloaded model. Finish the download while connected, then use it directly on your device. You do not need to keep a computer running or supply a cloud API key for that inference.

Start small. A file that fits in storage can still exceed available working memory, especially with a long conversation or image inputs. Model architecture and supporting files matter too; GGUF and MLX are formats, not guarantees that every model will work.

Vanta’s GGUF runtime supports text chat. Selected MLX models can also handle images or tool calls. Apple Intelligence is another on-device option when available, without a separate model download inside Vanta. Its integration requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later and eligible hardware; the app itself can be installed from iOS or iPadOS 18.

Use the on-device guide to understand downloads and availability, and compatibility to compare capability limits.

If you already have a desktop model

Keep the model where it already runs. Vanta can be the mobile client for an LM Studio, Ollama or vLLM server. Your phone sends the request; the computer performs inference and returns the response.

This is useful when you want the same host and model from a smaller screen. The computer must stay running, and the phone needs a reachable connection to its API. Being on the same Wi-Fi is a starting point; a firewall, guest-network isolation or a server listening only on loopback can still block access.

Follow the guide for LM Studio, Ollama or vLLM. These are connections to their compatible APIs, with Vanta supplying the mobile interface.

If the model is too large for your phone

Move inference to hardware with enough resources. A self-hosted computer lets you keep using Vanta while running a model that would not fit on the phone. That computer still needs enough memory and support for the model you choose.

A cloud provider is another option when you want hosted inference. It changes both the processing destination and the billing arrangement. You can keep presets for different sources and choose the one suited to the task; every conversation does not need the same setup.

If you need PDFs, images or tools

For PDFs, Vanta works with extracted text and retrieved passages. You do not need image support simply to ask about a text document, but document quality and the model’s context window affect the answer.

Photos and screenshots need a compatible vision model: a supported remote model or a selected vision-capable MLX model. GGUF and Apple Intelligence do not accept image input in Vanta.

Tools have another requirement. A remote model must support tool calls; selected MLX models and available Apple Intelligence can also use supported tools. GGUF does not make model tool calls in Vanta. Read files and PDFs and MCP tools before choosing a model for those workflows.

If privacy is the deciding factor

Check every destination, not just the chat model. Downloaded inference stays on-device. Self-hosted chat goes to the server you choose; cloud chat goes to the provider. Separately configured search, MCP, embeddings or cloud transcription can still send information outside the device.

For a private offline setup, review those services together with the model. Privacy and data flow explains what each feature sends and where keys and app data are stored.

Start with one working conversation

Choose one source, save a preset and send a short text message before adding files or tools. Getting started walks through that first choice. Vanta is a one-time app purchase; connected providers and services can have separate costs. See pricing before choosing paid services.
